9.29.2009

After meeting the past few weeks I did some synthesizing that has jumbled my interests entirely. First, Elona asked me two weeks ago to look into the following:

research tactile versus virtual
gather and categorize phrases, card types, purposes
come up with three strong potential sayings and images:
1. where you go is where i want to be
2. if you had three, you'd give me two, there ain't no other friend like you. (joshua radin)
3. thank you for existing.

I categorized the traditional uses for greeting cards and created a list:
birthday, thank you, "friendship", apology, get well, sympathy, keeping in touch, just saying   hi, anniversary, congratulations, holidays

I wrote this paragraph in response to my tactile versus virtual and gift giving research.
In the age of digital communication and ever expanding technology, in the midst of a chaotic and even jadded political and societal mess, how do people connect and create and develop authentic relationships? The concept of gift giving began eons ago, and itself is at times "jadded" and unauthentic. But, when a gift is a real gift that represents a part of a relationship, it is a very personal, exposing experience that furthers the development and strength of a relationship.

The article titled Facebook and MySpace have 'dehumanizing' effects Archbishop Nichols warns was the most interesting opinion I found on the subject of tactile versus virtual. He essentially argues for limitations of virtual communication because they limit the development of a strong community which is rooted in strong relationships.

I've been sketching different ideas of giving a gift, all in the realm of paper, and stumbled upon origami paper boxes and similar concepts. This came from the influence of the Thomas Lee as suggested by John Marshall.

However, I think I am at a standstill because I've had a different idea.
